May Born

Photo: Beacon Silver (Lamium) braved the cold to burst into bloom around my patio birdbath below metal hummingbird sculpture.

May Born

Wind whispers about Nature’s fickle way,
Then roars a warning that even though it’s May,
Old Man Winter begrudges being left behind,
And scatters souvenirs for us to find:
In the wee hours of night while people sleep,
Ice-crystal tears begin to weep,
Bruising early leaf tips brown,
Signaling His final departure’s frown.

But Mother will have no more of it!
After cold rains and Wind have done their bit,
She calls upon her ancient partner’s grace;
Ol’ Sol beams down and warms her face.
An exhilarated landscape responds to their dance
With an exuberant eruption of biomass!
Trees, shrubs and bulbs bloom with flowers,
Answering the summons of April’s showers.

Robins are a-bobbin’ and singing in the Dawn,
Heralding it’s time for new life to spawn.
Soil-covered seeds waiting since Fall,
Heed the invitation to this season’s ball.
A fuzzy-coated bumblebee busily attends
To pollen-spreading for his land-anchored friends.
Butterflies flutter and kiss the coral-bells,
While hunters search woods for prized morels.

Lilacs perfume the neighborhood air,
Vases carry fragrance indoors to share.
Sights, sounds and smells abound,
Rebirth and renewal’s again been found.
Hummingbirds return to spread their joy,
And with them, our spirits begin to buoy.
There’s no doubt now that Spring’s finally here,
And I swear I just heard…Summer cheer.
